About us
OKUDU is a UK-based importer of Indonesian furniture. It was started by Evie and Oliver Owen.
The name OKUDU is a "made-up" word, inspired by one of their favourite animals, the Kudu, a striped antelope-like creature with long graceful horns.
Evie and Oliver have long admired the high quality and loving-approach to wood craftsmanship displayed across the Indonesian islands. These particular pieces caught their eye, having a contemporary feel and quite different from typical garden furniture.
A specialist teak furniture manufacturer was chosen, on the island of Java, for its attention to detail and quality, and also for its ethical approach. There was a notable time in 2006 when an earthquake devastated many of their workers homes, so an area of the factory was turned over for the families to use and be fed etc.
The factory is in Yogyakarta, which has been the seat of the main Javanese Royal Family for many hundred years, and has a very long tradition of furniture craftmanship and art.
The teak used is all from government-regulated teak plantations in the region. OKUDU is adamant that none of the worlds rainforests should ever targeted for this beautiful wood.
The furniture is viewable at the OKUDU premises 4 miles from Jct 8 of the M40 in Oxfordshire
